But yet I continue to see more and more people screw this up. A simple U-turn. Take the vehicle from one direction, turn it 180 degrees, and go the other.

Far too often, I see people make a path like this.

Kinja'd!!!

Start the turn off very slow and wide, then, at the last second, panic turn the wheel so sharp as you realize your about to drive off the road, now you’ve made a 270 degree turn, so you now panic turn the wheel in the other direction, swerving like a snake across multiple lanes.

People. STOP. Please. for the love of god. This is simple!!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Drive forwards, until your rear wheels are just past the central barrier (assuming there is one), turn the wheel to full lock. hold the steering wheel at full lock through anywhere from 50% to 75% of the turn depending on the width of the road and the turning radius of your vehicle. Your goal is to end up in the right lane, on the FIRST try. As you come out of the turn, slowly allow your wheel to return to straight, making gentile, smooth adjustments as needed, to properly guide you into your lane.

Notice how the above image makes a U shape, not a backwards J and an S making retarded love children...

It’s 9 am and I’m over stupid for today.

I do the second one, but turn off traction control and spin the tires to drift the 180. Rwd ftw

My latest bit of stupid I’ve been seeing are people making illegal lefts. I don’t mean making a left where it says “no left turns,” but turning left at a green light where it’s yield to oncoming traffic. People seem to increasingly be only considering oncoming traffic to be people going straight, not people making a right. I’ve almost been hit repeatedly in the last few weeks while making a right turn on green by people making a left on yield.

People’s lack of ability to control their cars despite driving them daily is rather baffling.

The way driver training is taught in the US reduces the likelihood of any intelligence behind the wheel of a car.

when i went for my driving test the instructor brought me to a quiet road and asked me to do a 3 point turn. I managed to do a full u-turn, but that’s not what he asked so i backed up a foot and continued on just to make it a 3 point. I’ve also had someone pull a u-turn from the right lane cutting infront of me.

Could there be a No U-Turn sign there? That’s usually where I see people using that line.

Even in those cases, I hate it too.

The later happens quite often here. That and last minute right hand turns from the left lane and left hand turns from the right lane.

There is another way to do a U-turn.

I just picked a random intersection from maps.

But no, I see this ALL over the place, even places that aren’t intersections.

Pretty sure that’s the only correct way to do a u-turn, bro.

Driver training in the US? You kidding? Dude, I didn’t even have to take a driver’s test. They made me take my glasses off for a vision test to confirm that I can’t see without them, but no driving.

Same thing happened to me, except the instructor was the one who said to do that one foot wiggle to make it a three-point. Teaching people to do a three-point turn where there’s room for a U-turn... ...are we really surprised how many idiots there are...

I once saw someone do a three-point turn here. 4 lane road people...

Here’s a similar one.

Do it right.

Kinja'd!!!

If you do it wrong, as below, then you’re completely blocking visibility for any cars trying to turn from the other direction, causing them to either have to wait for you to go (and by the way, they’re now blocking your visibility) or inch out into traffic and hope they are able to spot a break.

Haha, that “it wasn’t a U-turn” excuse only works if they stop prior to reentering traffic though. I never really thought about doing that.

I have learned that people don’t understand that the steering wheel can spin more than 180° and their cars will turn proportionally. Of course, this affects their ability to execute u-turns and park efficiently.

I can pull a U-turn from inside lane to inside lane in my Yukon, how is this not manageable?

If i may....There are some scenarios where this maneuver is acceptable in my opinion. The most acceptable scenario for me is if the vehicle is incapable of making a U-Turn in the given amount of road and if it is a busy street with lots of traffic turning into that little driveway thing would allow the car to not have to back up in the middle of the street and cause a traffic jam or accident.

Don’t like U-turns? Come to sunny South Carolina, where they are ILLEGAL. (but three-point turns are not illegal... Go figure.) I’m always afraid to do a 3-point, lest someone think I am trying to do the FORBIDDEN TURN OF U.

Kinja'd!!! CAR_IS_MI > TJDMAX

If it’s to remove yourself from traffics way, okay, except for the snaking away like a baffoon who cant control their car part. The problem is, 99.9% of the time, this is not the scenario. It’s like an accord on a 3 lane wide road and very few cars...

Yea i hear ya. I wasn’t disagreeing just giving a scenario that may be acceptable...But you’re right. Most of the time its just people driving like idiots.
